WHY PIKOPIKO LEARNING...
When you first walk into our classrooms, you will immediately notice the beautiful indoor spaces with areas set up to enhance the open and natural environment and to invite the children to explore and learn. Inspired by Emmi Pikler, Reggio Emilia and the educational experience of Finland, the use of mostly natural resources throughout the centre allows for deeper exploration and understanding of our world.
As the research shows us, creating relationships and connections to the world and those around us is the most important key to building a confident person with a true sense of belonging, self-belief and the ability to reach their full potential. Having only two classrooms at Pikopiko Learning, your child is able to build particularly strong relationships with their teachers and friends allowing them to thrive in their personal development.
Because of this, we are inspired by Emmi Pikler in the Kowhai Room (Infants and Toddlers) to provide a nurturing and intimate environment allowing your baby opportunities to explore and create relationships with the world and the people around them. With respect at its core, our programme ensures that teachers work with and alongside your child, at their own pace, and moving forward with them individually as they are ready. The Kowhai outdoor garden and play area is separated from the older children, creating an environment designed for their individual needs and allowing them to confidently further those connections.
As we ensure that your child in the Pohutukawa Room (Preschool) continues to have such strong connections with their teachers and their friends around them, the teachers are able to encourage your child to begin forming their own theories as both and individual and in a group settings. Your child will be invited to work with a range of equipment as well as become involved in group investigations, focusing on exploring their ideas, theories and concepts and engaging in long term investigations to test their hypotheses. Through this inspiration from Reggio Emilia, your child is able to develop both independence working on their own, as well as the skills required to be an active part of a group. Learning to debate their ideas with their friends allows your child to develop the skills needed to live in the democratic society that we live in today. Our teachers encourage your child to think for themselves, make decisions and work towards their own solutions, by expressing their own ideas and feelings.
We are lucky that both of our outdoor gardens are like the natural environment that we are surrounded by and are made of real grass. The large open spaces that we have are able to be changed by the children and teachers as the seasons change, ensuring that it is a constantly inspiring environment. It also means that your child is able to experience everything from the sensation of grass beneath their feet, as well as the ooze of mud between their toes, just like we did when we were children.
We have a dedicated team of professional teachers who are passionate about children and their right to be given every opportunity to develop in their own unique way. The teachers role in the center is to provoke children to explore, discover, wonder and extend them to create a love of lifelong learning. Our team are all committed to ongoing professional development to ensure that we incorporate best practice from New Zealand and around the world into our daily practice.
With children enjoying such an inspiring environment, of course they are nourished with a nutritious home prepared meal by our centre cook to keep them learning and playing at their best.
We hope you will visit us at Pikopiko Learning soon, but in the meantime please don't hesitate to get in touch by phone or email for a chat.
